Psalms (all) - The hymnal of Israel, teaching us how to communicate in a real, raw relationship with God
EPISODE 56 The simple Bible overview of…THE BOOK OF PSALMS – DAVID’S SONGS
David's prayers and songs are compiled in the book of Psalms Psalms is the longest and most diverse book in the Bible. It's really easy to find, go to the middle of your Bible, open it. And you'll be in the Psalms Psalms contain a, a 150 prayers, poems and songs written in poetry. Many, if not, a majority are intended to be sung. The book of Psalms is the hymnal of God's people David wrote about half the Psalms. Another 50 are anonymous. The last 25 are by Moses Solomon and other people designated as worship leaders of the congregation. These Psalms were written over a millennium. The earliest by Moses in the latest, during the Babylonian captivity, when the dead sea scrolls were discovered, there were about 30 scrolls that contained parts or all of the book of Psalms.

As I mentioned, Psalms a written in poetic form. Poetry is our third clump of colors in the old Testament. Hebrew poetry is not like English English uses meter and rhyme. Hebrew poetry uses parallelism. Basically that means phrases Flo to elaborate on or contrast the previous phrase. We'll see this in job. Psalms Proverbs Ecclesiastes. He's in song of songs. As mentioned in an earlier episode, Psalms are not to be taken. Literally, this is love language. Psalms reflects our deep feelings as human beings in relation to God in each other. Psalms captures feelings ranging from euphoric worship to furniture, kicking anger and rage though.

Some older translations, try to make them quite washed and elegant. They're really very raw and earthy. I'd recommend you read them in a modern translation. They're not to be polished or polite. Just embarrassingly honest. Some of the Psalms are direct prayers. Others are directed to God's. People challenging them to join him in praise or appeal to God a whole section of the Psalm Psalm one 20 to one 30 for our called the songs of a scent God's people would sing these Psalms together. Kind of like kid campers on a school bus on their way to a retreat singing 100 bottles of insert your choice of beverage on the wall.

I've just sort of violated the spirit of the Psalms with this introduction. They're not intended to be dissected like a bug in biology class they're meant to be experienced. So let's experience a few of my favorite David Psalms briefly together. Let's start with the one you probably know. I imagine young David watching his sheep. The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want, he makes me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul or this one after being under a canopy of stars. Oh Lord, our Lord. How majestic is your name and all of the earth. When I consider your heavens the works of your hands, the moon and stars, which you've ordained.

What is man? That you are mindful of him? Oh Lord, our Lord. How majestic is your name and all the earth or some three written as he ran away from Absalom. Oh Lord. How my adversaries have increased. How many are rising up against me? Many are saying of my soul. There is no deliverance for him in God, but you all Lord are a shield about me. You're my glory. The one who lifts my head, I will not be afraid of 10 thousands of people who have set themselves against me around about salvation belongs to the Lord or some 16. The Lord is my portion and my inheritance.

Indeed. My inheritance is sweet. Therefore I set the Lord always before me for he is at my right hand. I will not be shaken. No wonder my heart is glad. My tongue rejoices and my body dwells secure Psalm 18. I love you. My Lord, my strength, Lord, you are my rock and my fortress, my deliverer, my rock in whom I take refuge. I call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised. And I am saved from my enemies. Psalm 27. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life. Whom shall I dread some 32 probably written by David after his forgiveness for the bash Sheba incident?

How bless it is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered, how blessed it is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity. And in whose spirit there is no deceit. I acknowledged my sin to you and my iniquity. I did not hide. I said I will confess my transgressions to the Lord. And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Psalm 34. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord. The humble shall hear it and rejoice. Oh, magnify the Lord with me. Let us exalt his name together. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.

Psalm 63. I seek you earnestly my soul thirsts for you. My flesh yearns for you in this dry and weary land, where there is no water. I lie awake at night. Thinking of how much you've helped me. I sing for joy and the shadow of your strong protective wings. Your strong right hand upholds me securely Psalm 22. My God, my God. Why have you forsaken me? Oh my God. I cry day and night to you, but you don't answer. Be not far from me for trouble is near Psalm one Oh three. Bless the Lord. All my soul. And all of that is within me. Bless his Holy name.

Bless the Lord on my soul and forget none of his who pardons all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit who crowns you with loving kindness and compassion who satisfies your years with good things so that your youth is renewed. Like the Eagles bless the Lord. Oh my soul, someone 39, Oh Lord. You've searched me. And you know me, you know, and I sit down and when I rise up, you understand my thoughts from afar in our intimately acquainted with all my ways you've enclosed me behind and before and laid your strong right hand over me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me. It's too high. I can't attain it all, man. I could just go on and on, but you go get a modern translation and explore this amazing hymnal for yourself. As we discovered early on, God made us for an intimate relationship. There is no other book in scripture that communicates that relationship in the middle of our brokenness as does the book of Psalms. It's a, well, you will not reach the bottom of, for the rest of your life. I've heard many people say they've read and ponder a Psalm every day to feed their soul and to teach them how to communicate raw and real with their God having heard David story and now peaked and to some of his heart language.
